Her living
Her house consists of only two rooms without appropriate cleanliness and space. The whole family is surviving in those two small rooms. She makes an effort to accommodate all of their basic needs in that tiny dwelling. One room is where the home begins, and the second room is where it ends. The area is extremely filthy, lacking in hygiene and doesn’t even have bathroom facilities. Inside the same space, they have made arrangements of the kitchen and sitting area. All of them sleep on the floor in the same room. Children don’t even get space to study or do homework when everyone is at home. Well, most of them are not even studying.
She saves water for her daily needs. She dries her clothes in the house that doesn’t have enough facilities and basically does everything according to the space available. Secondly, the area is very unorganized and full of garbage, mostly collected from the roadside, such as water bottles, water tanks, cloth bags, and wrappers.
Her family
She has three brothers, Gulab, Yadam, and Dhiru and one sister. In real she spent her childhood with four brothers and one sister along with her parents but unfortunately, she lost one of her brothers Mannu, due to some mysterious reasons.
She raised one son and one daughter; both of them got married and are having a family life. Savitaben is staying with her son Satish. In order to care for the home and kids, Savitaben and her daughter-in-law works as house help. Savitaben constantly adored her daughter-in-law and treated her like one of her own children. Savitaben leads an ordinary life with her family and is a very straightforward individual. It is apparent that people start to forget things when they reach their sixties. As her son is ill, the two women are standing like a pillar for family and working hard being the man and the woman of the house at the same time for the better survival.
Likes and dislikes
Fresh vegetables and home-cooked traditional dishes are Sabitaben’s favourite dishes. She enjoys eating pav bhaji, dosas, and other similar delicacies sold on the streets by the vendors, but she has never been to a hotel. She accepted her life as God has planned for her without any complaints. She works every day to maintain this lifestyle.
Savitaven doesn’t have any friends. But, she has a cousin. Her cousin, Manju was the daughter of her uncle, with whom she was very close. She used spend a lot of time with her. They used to walk around town playing tree-climbing games and even having serious conversations about everything that was going on in their lives. She wasn’t just a sister for her, rather was her best friend, sister, her go-to person, etc. She didn’t go to school, but on Sundays, she went to the schoolyard to play and did some tree climbing.
She followed Hinduism and has a strong faith in the goddess Dasama, She was always pretty and happy no matter what. It is said that a smile is the best accessory anybody could put on. She has lost many closed ones, but she has never lost her courage. Despite this age, she was able to support her family. She has many problems, but she always believed in God. She has that one wish to visit Kher Gham once in her life.
Shocker for her
Mentioning her daughter, she was heartbroken and emotional of her daughter`s move. Her daughter got married by her choice first time without any consent from her parents. This slammed the family’s prestige in society. Of the bad luck, the man she chooses was wrong and kicks her out of the house. Despite anger and pain, Savitaben took her back and got her remarried. But this brought no change in her daughter’s attitude and their relationship is still numb. Her daughter would only call her when she needed money but never ever called to ask her about her health or if she needed anything. After abandoning her house, she didn’t even make an attempt to get in touch with her mother unless she needed any monetary help.
The lesson she has for us
She says you should never hurt your parents, even if you feel they don’t support you. She admits she may have made some mistakes in parenting. So her daughter might have taken a hasty step. Sabitaben says her parents were also in a love marriage and Sabitaben should have supported her daughter. She added that there is nothing wrong to marry for love, but it is absolutely not right to marry the wrong man.
We live in a society where everyone has to do their best at all times. She says marriage is not about rich or poor, it’s about a good partner, a respected family and most importantly the happiness of both families. Trying to talk and communicate with them. Don’t make decisions that will leave you with only regrets.
You can’t control the problems that arise, but you can protect yourself from further damage. We should be happy living lives that other people don’t have. Savitaven came from a poor family and was uneducated, but she really knew how to live, how to make money, and how to keep her family together all the time. She proved that one should be able to handle things in one’s life and that no book can teach you that, only your experience and strength can help you overcome problems and live a normal life.
